Clearing of snow and winter serviceability
There are lots of legends and jokes about the Bieszczady snows. Indeed, it often snows in winter and it snows a lot. However, the gmina of Cisna (local authorities) believes that winter maintenance of roads is the priority. Main roads (ring-road) are serviceable practically always (attention: the roads are not gritted with salt, with exception of a few fragments - in winter there is a layer of compact snow on the roads). Roads in villages are cleared of snow after it stops snowing, however, many inhabitants own snowplows and use them to clear the roads in the villages.
In winter we suggest that you use winter tires. Using summer tires you may find it difficult even to drive on the first uphill road from the ring-road to Strzebowiska. The cars with only two-wheel drive should make use of chains in some parts. Cars with 4x4 drive (equipped with winter tires) should not encounter any problems. In winter it is good to have a towing line (it is best if the line is not elastic) and a snow shovel. The drivers, both local and visiting, are eager to help with pulling out the cars that got stuck. They will also be grateful if you help them in case of need.
Please, pay attention to roadsides, as in winter the ditches that run along the roads are covered. Driving into snow in a ditch, including turning the car on the side usually does not cause any damages, but you will not be able to drive out on your own (we have checked that on our own several times!). It is necessary to use help of other cars or a winch, sometimes even heavier equipment: a tractor, a heavy plow.
